RAIN

A gust of wind busts a window open, letting a squeal of rain roll in the room.

“Shit,” I murmur, leaping out of bed and rushing to the window to close it.

Water sparkles on the floor, little puddles forming at my feet. What’s up with this weather?

The sky was clear only a few moments ago, the sunset spellbinding as always, and now it’s hell outside, everything wet.

Leaning forward, I peek through the windows.

Sprinkled with raindrops, the grass glimmers outside while clouds of petals spin in the air.

The sight is still beautiful, despite the nasty weather.

I tear my gaze away from the window and walk back to the bed.

From a bowl sitting on the nightstand, I pick a blueberry and pop it into my mouth. I take a sip of cold coffee before I slide onto the bed and place my laptop on my lap.

I start typing.

A few more words pour on the page before my mind starts wandering away. Slowly, my eyes slide to my thigh high socks before they move to my phone.

I wonder what time it is in Singapore.

No, no... I should get back to work.

I barely type another sentence before my phone starts to hum against the covers. I snatch it from the bed and tip my gaze down. Eve’s name flashes on the screen.

Oops, a video call.

“What’s my favorite author doing?” she asks, a smile beaming on her face.

“Squirming,” I say, laughing.

“How many more chapters until the end of the book?”

“Seven.”

“Oh...” she says.

I hear the cadence of her steps against the sidewalk.

“Where are you?”

“I finished work, and now I’m going to the gym.”

“Good girl.”

She chuckles entertained.

“It has nothing to do with me. We just got a new instructor in the spinning class, and he’s kind of cute. It makes the time go by faster.”

“I see.”

“You? What’s new with you?”

I swing my arm–– my phone in my grip, to give her a better view of my room.

“I’m working. The weather sucks. The house is empty. You know... The usual stuff.”

“I don’t think this thing is working for you, Rain,” she says swinging past people, slicing her way on the busy streets of New York.

“Writing?”

“Uh-huh. You’re too anxious to sit alone in a room for so long.”

“I have to finish this book.”

“Finish it and take a break. Get out. Travel. Go visit James.”

“Visit James?”

“Yeah. Why the hell not? I understand that you don’t want to follow him around like a lost puppy, but you should visit him once in a while. See what he’s up to.”

I breathe out a laugh.

“Are you saying that I should show up unannounced to make him a surprise?” I ask, a sly grin on my lips.

Her crystalline laugh fills my ears.

“I don’t know about that. It’s really up to you. I wouldn’t do it. I, um... think? But I would go see him. How long has it been since you saw him last time?”

“Three weeks.”

“That’s a lot of time.”

“I’m not flying all the way to Asia just to see him. No fucking way.”

“Didn’t you say that he has to travel to Europe, now that Ed comes home.
